Bill Waldorf joins DC Engineering as the firm expands into Milling Machine Foundation Design

Bill is widely respected as a leading expert in concrete foundations for heavy milling machines.

Milling machine foundations are designed for a world of extremes. These foundations often consist of thousands of cubic yards of concrete and handle parts that can weigh hundreds of thousands of pounds. At the same time, the structures must meet exacting dimensions and meet deflection tolerances measured in microns.

Bill’s introduction to these types of projects shortly after graduating from college in 1976, while working for a small engineering firm:
“We got a call from Ingersoll Milling, the leading milling machine manufacturer at the time, asking if we would look at a concrete foundation for one of their machines at a Boeing plant in Seattle. The foundation wasn’t meeting the required tolerances, and no one could figure out how to fix the problem. I thought to myself, since we could quantify the issue -- we knew the pad design and how far out of deflection tolerance they were, then we should be able to figure out a solution. So, I wrote a computer program to reverse engineer the design. When my calculations matched the measured deflections almost exactly (to micron level), I knew we likely had a solution, and sure enough we did.”

For over 40 years, Bill has successfully designed well over 400 milling machine foundations requiring tight tolerances and is sought after for many of these types of projects:
“Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of foundations that were either under or over-engineered. When they’re under-engineered, it’s a very expensive problem to fix. When they’re over-engineered, it is still very costly – we have seen upwards of $50,000 to $100,000 per foot of unnecessary concrete. You can get it right – it just requires a precise understanding of the calculations, and the ability to direct qualified contractors through the construction process”.

Long before it was common practice, Bill used emerging technology and wrote a computer program to solve a complex engineering challenge. That same innovative spirit is foundational to DC Engineering.
